You vs. You – What Motivates You?
- “Mom doesn’t approve of this lifestyle.”
- “I work two jobs.”
- “I am in debt.”
- “I want to prove other’s wrong.”
- “I want to prove my ex wrong and show him that I can work hard and get on stage.”
The above comes from a recent email from a potential client of mine, interested in prepping for a show she expressed all the distractions she was facing at the time.
Break It Down, Daily Routines
Ok, let’s break this down and pause for a second. If your life is already overwhelming, why would you want to add something else to it? Think about it. If your foundation isn’t solid, there is nothing you can build on top of it – you need to build from the ground up. Even if there is failure, with a solid foundation you can always rebuild! Yes, I know…Who am I to talk, right? Remember, I am the one who overloads my plate at a buffet restaurant and it is also something I do in life as well. But I have to say, with time, I have discovered my limitations, when to say NO, and how to organize my daily routine by keeping a daily TO rightDO log and schedule book. This has helped me achieve my daily goals and find balance between which hat I need to wear at that moment and time. I guess I just threw in a quick tip, daily TO DO logs and schedules really help – especially when you’re low carbing it!
Take a Breath. Choose the Change
My suggestion is to make a few changes in your everyday situation before taking on another challenge. Change is good. While it can be scary at first, making changes will allow you to grow and push forward. First, I would start by surrounding yourself with people that support you and want the best for you. I am telling you the environment that YOU choose to place yourself in makes a big difference in your everyday life.
Fuel Up with Positive Sources
Another change would be to find positive sources that motivate you. In my opinion, being motivated by negativity will only result in emptiness. Yes, you can use past experiences, good or bad, to fuel you and achieve success and reach goals, but the source of your motivation shouldn’t be negative. I say this because if you haven’t truly let go of the past, there is no way you can experience forward movement, and without forward movement you will never achieve your goals!
Reflect and Learn but Keep on Moving!
And if you allow outside sources to guide you, you might want to take the time to figure out why you allow outside sources to manipulate your present day and future decisions. There will always be obstacles in our way. From timing and people, to money and work, the list can and will go on! But it is how you handle the obstacles, and what you learn from your challenges that will prepare you for the next chapter in your life.
My advice to this person is to take things one step at a time. First, start with changing the environment around you, surround yourself with positive, like-minded people, who not only want to succeed, but want to see you succeed as well.
Second, get your everyday situation under control, work towards lowering your debt and try to save some money so you can pay for training or do what is required to achieve your goals. Because we all know that this sport of Bodybuilding, or just the fitness industry itself, will cost you a pretty penny or thousands…lol!
Third, reflect on the past and learn from it, but don’t allow it to interfere with your present or future goals.
Fourth, and most important in this situation, you need to do it for yourself! We all go through everyday challenges, bad breakups, financial issues, or whatever the obstacles may be, but you should never allow how someone has treated you to determine what you do in your future. In order to fully experience forward movement you must let go of the past!
I am gonna leave you guys with this thought… If we were stripped of Social Media, TV, cell phones, Internet, or anything that is visual, would you still be motivated to do what you do? Would your underlying factors be different?
